Drawing With Charcoal and Tape on Paper

The artist will talk about the process he uses when working on his drawings, using stenciling with tape, scratching the surface to create textures, working in tonal values using charcoal dust and a rag and colouring using dried pigments. And he'll talk a bit about tinted varnishes. He will bring materials for examples.

And he'll discuss his work in a more biographical way; where he comes from, the benefits and downside of living in a large city while recalling impressions from a rural past. And, in a more general way, just talk about how ideas eventually end up on a piece of paper.

Beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome to attend and share their own ideas and techniques with others.

Clay Workshop   -  ( Creating Your Personal Shaman or Animal Spirit )

This is designed for both beginners in clay and those who have experience and want to broaden their knowledge of figurative sculpture, gesture and expression and the possibilities created by using clay as “fabric” for draping and decorating a figure.

Prior to the workshops participants will be expected to do some research on their favourite animal (real or mythical) and bring as many references to that animal in the form of images (photos, drawings, books etc.)

We will will begin by going through the basics of using clay to create freestanding figures and explore techniques for building and supporting, creating gesture and attitude and creating facial expression.

We will then look at the techniques of using the clay as a fabric to finish the figures. This involves gathering organic material such as leaves, twigs and grasses to press into the clay. I also use lace, and heavily textures fabric.

Participants will leave with at least one finished Shaman/Spirit Animal

If their is time to do this workshop and fire the work I would be happy to do a short finishing session for participants to be able to oxide or hand finish their work)

What is special and very exciting about clay is that it is an immediate and inexpensive way to explore  a three dimensional material and one that can offer such immediacy and freedom of expression!

This would be a four hour workshop.

Ten participants maximum. ( I usually work with eight but if space allows and there is a lot of interest I can do ten.)

Supplies for Workshop.

Clay - ¼ bag of clay for each student.

There are two bags per box and I need to know what types are available.

Wooden Bats

Buckets for Water

Spray Bottles for water

Rags and Plastic bags

Newspaper

I will bring all tools necessary. Participants need to bring images of their chosen animal.

Artist's Presentation.

I would like to do a power point presentation with my artists talk.

The images are those of my most recent exhibition and of an exhibition I had six years ago. Both bodies of work feature a raven and a hare who are metaphors or archetypes of ourselves.

I will talk about the progression of work as it has developed technically through learning from others and taking risks.  I will also talk about the importance of our stories and  of story telling to keep us connected to an ever-shifting reality.

I would like to communicate my passion for clay as a material. How using this material to tell stories and create dialogue  has so much potential.

This presentation would take about 20 mins. Then I would be available for questions regarding techniques, ideas and images.
